What does Makitup mean...?
Oh, right. I managed to miss that bit of text.
Mäkitupalainen. They were the poorest of the poor, and had to earn their living by doing various odd jobs around the village. Most of them were servants (piikoja and renkejä), but some were craftsmen and such. Basically, they were the people who had no home to call their own (and couldn't go back to their parents home, for some reason), so they lived in the mäkitupa. Basically just a small huts, with lot of people in them, and maybe a tiny piece of land that they didn't own. Many of them became emigrants, because they had absolutely nothing left to lose.
If the parents of this Matti were mäkitupalaisia, then it's no wonder that there's not much data to be found with HisKi. They tended to travel, and their surnames changed every time they changed jobs - that might've changed dozens of times for some of them.
