Murder suspect in custody
A 35-year old man wanted in connection with the murder of Foreign Minister Anna Lindh, was last night apprehended at a restaurant outside the Råsunda soccer stadium. Police investigators questioned him during the night, but do not want to give any information as to what came out of the preliminary inquiry. Police will continue to search houses and speak to witnesses today.
The 35-year old man was watching the derby soccer game between Djurgården and Hammarby on a wide screen television, at the time of the police intervention. He remained calm and was not carrying a weapon. With a light-blue hooded sweater covering his face, police took him to a nearby car, in which he was then taken to police custody, "Kronobergshäktet" in central Stockholm.
At a press conference held late last night, Leif Jennekvist, commander of the investigation, said the man had so far only confirmed his identity. Police were also going to get samples for DNA-analysis.
Mr Jennekvist explained, at the press conference last night, that they were still just at the beginning of a long and strenuous inquiry. "There are at least five people of immediate importance whom we want to investigate further," he said.
