Louis "Big Louie" Moilanen - Copper Country
If one searches, one finds that in the history of every community there are one or two people who make a memorable impression, for whatever reason, good, bad, or otherwise. Louis "Big Louie" Moilanen was one of the Copper Country's men to remember: Louie reached a height of 8 feet, one inch; weighed 400 pounds; had 24-inch thights; and a neck measurement of 18. He was born in Finland and came to America at age four with his parents who moved to the Houghton-Hancock area. His mother was slightly over 4 feet tall, his father 5 feet 9. He was in the Ringling Circus for a while, also ran a saloon in Hancock, and served a term as justice of the peace there. He died at twenty-eight in 1913.
