I am trying to find some information on my grandfather, Thomas Sinclair Finklea, and his family. Since the topic of ancestry was never mentioned while he was alive (he died in 1991), and only recently has the interest in family history been rekindled, I am at a loss because the information on his branch of the family is virtually nonexistent.
This is what I do know; perhaps someone can help me on this.
My grandfather was born in 1907 in Berkeley County, SC. His father was Thomas James Finklea, although I do not know his mother's name; only that her maiden name was Bannister (or Banister; I am uncertain as to the actual spelling). Her father's name was Stephen Bannister, and was a local doctor.
My great-grandmother attended Vassar College in New York. As I understand it, my great-grandfather, Thomas James Finklea, was one of the more prominent cotton farmers in Berkeley Co. at the time. My grandfather moved to Petersburg, VA sometime between 1929 and 1934; he had been here about a minimum of two to three years (time is approximate) before marrying my grandmother. He has a sister whose last known residence was in Port Washington, NY. No contact has been made with that branch of the family in over 10 years.
I have tried to research my ancestry in the past, and while the information I received back was quite interesting and informative, it still provided no definitive clues regarding my branch of the family tree. Any help and links, however remote, are greatly appreciated.
Kevin Thomas Finklea
