I have just been to Salt Lake City to try to dig up information on Stephen Finch in the genealogy library there. I had information that lead me to believe that he is my 4th great grandfather. I am still trying to verify my link to him. I had information from DAR records that he was the father of my 3rd great grandfather, Pliny. However, the documents that I copied in Salt Lake (from the National Archives regarding Rev. War pensions) indicate that there was a more recent Stephen...his son, Stephen, whom you indicate was married to Mercy Atwood. I believe that Pliny's father was the younger Stephen Finch. I checked in the records regarding pensions for Revolutionary War Veterans, as the DAR information indicated that Stephen (the elder) had served as a private in that war. I copied about 30 page of "bureaucratic red-tape" that pertained to his $30 per annum pension. Some of it is quite interesting, and helpful to a genealogist. Stephen was finally granted the pension, and his wife, Mindwell, received it later, too. There is one paper that is in Stephen's own handwriting that gives the names and birthdates of his children. His son, Stephen, was born in 1779. It gives only birthdates of his children, as it appears that they were all living at the time of his application for the pension. His other children were James, Mindwell and Hopefull. Stephen (the elder) was born in 1754 in Smithfield Twp, Providence, Rhode Island, according to this information from the National Archives. He married his wife, Mindwell Moore 4 Feb 1779 in Symsbury (or Simsbury), CT. I have some other dates, but I will wait to hear from you regarding the information that you have and what you need. What I need at this point is information on Stephen (the younger, b. 1779). It sounds like you know more about him than I do, even though the birthdate that you have is not the same as his father wrote on his application for pension. What was your source for his wife's name. Do you have a date for their marriage, and any names of children. I am sure that this is my line, but I must verify that Pliny (who died in Linn Co., IA) was his son. Do you have any information that might help me make this link? Please let me know if I can be of help to you on this line of Stephen (both elder and younger) Finch. Thanks, Kathy Brinton blazy2@silverstar.com
