The name of the war (or battle) depends upon which side of the lines you are on./ The name used by the South at the time was the War for Southern Independence. The North called it a civil war which is a misnomer. A civil war has two factions fighting fot control of the governent. This was not the case - the South fought a defensive war (the reason they lost) and couldn't care less what Billy Yank did, they just wanted to be left alone. After the war the appelation of war between the states was given as a compromise. The South clearly felt that there territory had been invaded and it was sometimes (informally) referred to as the war of Northern Agression.
