Not always, but I play percentages. 90% of the people who don't list a location in their post are newbies.

Your points are good too. May I copy some of them onto my "Good Post" page, citing you? I look up obits for people who post on the GenForum Stanislaus County page. Twice I've had people thank me and say they already got the obit from someone else who sent it via e-mail, without posting it. I don't mind spending half an hour looking something up for a good cause, but I mind wasting half an hour. For a general query, I'd say the best response would be two-fold; a reply of paragraph or two with dates and places of the dead and a note saying you were also researching the line, and an e-mail to the person with complete data or a GEDCOM.

You are right. When I'm bored I look for messages a month old that have the words "please help" in them and have no reply. I find genealogical puzzles more interesting than cross-words. Usually the ones I can do some good with are from newcomers, and usually I don't do much more than point them in the right direction.
If I was a Fifield or Strong researcher, I would have researched the entries on RWWC. I would have looked them up in the census and done all the good stuff. You could imagine me, impeccably dressed, with three yellow pads and a dozen pencils, down at the local history room in the library. Now imagine a fellow who hasn't showered or shaved yet, in his PJ's, nursing his first cup of coffee and, instead of trying to think of a four-letter word for "beasts of burden", trying to help someone looking for Jessie Alonso and Clara.
