Still digging! If Hiram was born about 1865 in Bakersville, NC as some researchers contend, he would have been born on Indian lands (Cherokee).

Is the Richard Fields listed in this family, the Richard Fields that married Jennie Buffington. They were the parents of Ezekiel, Elizabeth, George, Nancy, John, Moses, Dempsey and Henry according to researchers. This Richard was Cherokee Chief Richard Fields. The reason I ask is the name "Dempsey" caught my eye. Not a very common name and Jedida Fields named a son Dempsey. Glain
