Hi Tonya,
There is no direct evidence that the wife of Ninian Beall HAMILTON was a FIELD.IF she was a FIELD, it is also unlikely that her name was Ann Mary, it was probably just Ann.There is a recorded deed in Rowan Co., NC deeds 11:849-850 in 1789 that is signed by "Ninian Beall HAMILTON" and "Ann Mary Beall HAMILTON."This deed book is a typed copy, apparently done by the county to replace the original. Not only was there the original chance for error in copying the actual deed into the deed book, but then a second chance for error when the typed deed book was made. The fact that this copy gives her name as "Ann Mary Beall Hamilton," with probably a miscopy of Beall from Ninian's name, makes the whole "Ann Mary" very suspect. All other records give the wife of Ninian only as "Ann."
For evidence of Ann being a FIELD:
Ninian B. HAMILTON in an 1802 letter from "New Spain The province of Lusianna St. Andrews Kistrict (sic) Missoria River Bonium Creek Thirty miles west of St. Luis" to his brother Horatio HAMILTON in Stokes Co., NC asked to be remembered to a number of people including "our old brother Fields." [For the whole letter see: The Rev. Gordon and Dolores Miltenberger, *Three Hamiltons of Maryland, Gavin, Andrew, Ninian,* (Dallas, TX: by authors, 1983), 42]
"Our" could mean Ninian and his wife, or Ninian and his brother Horatio."Brother" could mean an actual brother or also mean step-brother, half-brother, brother-in-law, or an unrelated person as a brother in arms or membership in a church.
There is no evidence among known make-up and relations of the HAMILTON family of the "Fields" reference being an actual brother, step-brother or half-brother.That leaves brother-in-law, or "brother" as an unrelated person.
If Ann was a FIELD, it would most likely have been from the FIELD family in Guilford County, with whom Ninian B. HAMILTON was acquainted. This FIELD family did have a daughter named Ann.See information on this family and her father's will at: http://pweb.netcom.com/~fzsaund/field.htmlhttp://pweb.netcom.com/~fzsaund/field.htmlNote that William FIELD also had a daughter named Mary so that if Ninian B. HAMILTON's wife Ann was indeed an "Ann Mary" it would be unlikely she was a FIELD.
Evidence for Ann FIELD, daughter of William FIELD and wife Jane being the same person as Ann, wife of Ninian B. HAMILTON.
1. The letter mentioned above by Ninian B. HAMILTON mentioning "our old brother Fields."
2. Opportunity To Meet.Ninian B. HAMILTON was a member of the Regulator movement and listed in records with Jeremiah FIELD. The assumption can be made that he had opportunity to meet Jeremiah's sister Ann.See Colonial Records of NC VIII:245 where Hermon HUSBANDS, James HUNTER, William BUTLER, Ninian Bell HAMILTON, Jeremiah FIELDS, Matthew HAMILTON, Ely BRANSON, Peter CRAVEN, John FRINT, Abraham TEAGUE, and Samuel PARKS were a number of regulators who assaulted John WILLIAMS, Esquire.See also 22:891 where a petition to Gov. Josiah MARTIN was signed by Jeremiah FIELD, Matthew HAMLETON, Eley BRANSTON, James HUNTER, Samuel DEVENY, James LOW, John TRUIT, John PUGH, Thomas WELBORN, and Ninian HAMBELTON.
3. Correct Age.Ann, daughter of William FIELD, and Ann, wife of Ninian B. HAMILTON would appear to be about the same age.In his 1748 will, William FIELD listed his daughter Ann as under age 18.His eldest sons, John and William were at least 21.With 5 minor children, and allowing 2 years between each, Ann FIELD's probable birth was in the mid to late 1730s.The Bible record of Ninian B. HAMILTON's son Ninian lists that his father Ninian B. HAMILTON was born 28 Nov. 1739 and ided 6 Apr. 1831. [See Miltenberger, 77-81 for photocopy.]This son Ninian HAMILTON was age 50-60 in the 1830 St. Louis Co., MO census, agreeing with his 19 May 1777 birth. Also in the household were a 90-100 year old male, and a 90-100 year old female. The assumption is the male was Ninian B. HAMILTON and the female his wife Ann, placing her birth as 1730-1740.
4. Naming Patterns. In the 1802 letter Ninian B. HAMILTON named 9 children.Six of these names probably came from HAMILTON relatives.
--i. William
--ii. Andrew, probably named after Ninian B. HAMILTON's grandfather Andrew HAMILTON, and uncle Andrew HAMILTON.
--iii. Margaret, probably named for Ninian's mother Margaret LUCAS.
--iv. Sarah, probably named for Ninian's sister Sarah.
--v. Jane
--vi. Ninian, probably named for himself and his father
--vii. Ann, probably named for Ninian's wife
--viii. Jeremiah
--ix. Mary probably named for Ninian's paternal grandmother Mary (BEALL) HAMILTON.
The remaining 3 names William, Jane, Jeremiah are not found among the HAMILTON family, other than that Ninian B. HAMILTON had an uncle, his mother's brother, named William LUCAS.Note that if Ann, wife of Ninian B. HAMILTON is the same as Ann, daughter of William FIELD, then these three names would be the names of her father, her mother, and her brother with whom Ninian served in the Regulators.
5. Continued Association of the Families. Ninian B. HAMILTON and wife Ann had a daughter Mary HAMILTON that married Robert BAY, and they moved to Franklin Co., MO.Robert and Mary had a daughter Ann "Nancy" BAY born about 1805.William FIELD and wife Jane had a son Joseph, whose daughter Lydia married Samuel SHORT in 1796 in Guilford Co., NC.Samuel and Lydia had a son Eli SHORT born about 1797. Samuel and Lydia moved about 1802 to KY and then in 1819 to Franklin Co., MO near Robert BAY and wife Mary HAMILTON.If Ann was a FIELD, then Lydia FIELD (with her husband Samuel SHORT) were settling near her first cousin Mary HAMILTON (and husband Robert BAY).Eli SHORT and Ann "Nancy" BAY were married in the early 1820s.
