Hi John,
Not sure about this statement about William & John being the same person.

On the 1841 census at Church End, Great Canfield

There is

John & Maria
with children
William,
John,
Stephen, all show different ages, so that would suggest that
they all existed.

I believe Maria came from High Roding, and not Great Canfield,so it MAY well have been that her first child was baptised there???
Worth a look I think.
