My Fetterlys found in Herkimer Co, NY from 1801 to 1889 when my grandmother was born in Mohawk. She had a sister, Etta, and a brother William Fetterly who became a Remington sales rep in the Arizona territory, a prominent farmer of citrus, a renowned poultry judge, and co-founder of a saving & loan. His son, Larry Fetterly b. CA. Earliest known Fetterly is Jacob, b, 1801 who married Margaret b. 1805 but little more known about this NY couple. I'd like to learn marriage date and other children of Jacob & Margaaret.
Their daughter, Mary Margaret, married William J. Smith!(try researching that name!)who ,by family legend, was killed in the Civil War so son William took back the name Fetterly and was raised by grandparents when Mary Margaret died unknown date. This son, William Smith Fetterly, moved with wife and kids to L.A., built a solar home at his nursery on Fetterly Avenue in east L.A. where he grafted fruit trees, and died a beloved and well-known civic leader. Don't know the origins of the name yet but possibly Swiss-Fetterle. I would enjoy hearing about your Fetterlys. Gae
