Recently i began the process of renovating the master bedroom of an old home. While tearing apart old plaster around a wooden mantel which still hung in place, though the fireplace had long since been plastered over and forgotten, i noticed a name, written in a child's penmanship. The name was still very legible although written with a pencil and well over a 100 years old. Juliena Jane Ferris it read.
I took the small wooden mantel off with a crowbar next and as soon as i started working it loose a host of item fell at my feet. Items that had been sitting at one time on the mantel, and were lost in the small crack where the wood joined the plaster. Large bobbie pins, old stick matches, a skeleton key, pencil lead, etc. Then as i worked the mantel loose some more i saw something else fall. I knelt down and wiped the plaster dust off a small photo. The face of a young girl, probably 9 or 10 smiled back at me. She had a beautiful smile in the portrait which looked to be taken in the late 1800's. My 1st thought was, could this girl be the Juliena Jane Ferris whose name was written only 3 or 4 feet away that i had discovered earlier?
To add to my mystery….written in pencil on the plaster next to where the mantel once hung was the initials CSC and the year 1883.
Hmmm…..i bought this old home 21 years ago and am still remolding . I would sure like to find more on this person Juliena. Is she the person in the photo? The picture sure meant alot to her Mother or Father or whomever saw it go in the crack . The photo has 4 very distinct marks/creases on it that points to someone who who did what you or i would have done…stick a knife or something down the crack and try to lift the photo out.
My home where all this took place is on Worthington Rd. Wilmington ,Ohio. Any info is appreciated. Feel free to email me for pictures etc.
