A biography/family history of Joseph A. Ferris, pioneer, hunter, rancher, and businessman, is included in "Montana, Its Story and Biography", Vol 3, pages 687 & 688. Joseph's greatgrandfather was the English founder of the family in New Brunswick, where he established his home on a farm and engaged in lumbering.

Joseph A. Ferris was born, 12 Dec 1856, son of Thomas R. and Catherine (Ferris) Ferris. Catherine was the daughter of William Ferris. Children of Thomas R. and Catherine: Mary (Mrs. Christopher Douglas. Mary died at Whites Cover, New Brunswick); William (St. John's, NB); Joseph A. (Terry, MT); Sylvanus M. (Dickinson, ND); Lillie (Mrs. Sydney Steward, lived on the old Ferris homestead in NB); Maud (Mrs. Charles Robertson, lived in the Ferris community in White's Cove, NB).

In his youth, Joseph A. Ferris left home and for three seasons went aboard a sailing craft trading between St. John's and Portland, ME. Later he went into farming. In 1880, he and his brother, Sylvanus, went by train from St. John's, NB, through Quebec, Montreal, and Ontario to Detroit, on to Chicago and then to St. Paul and Duluth, MN, where he joined an outfit going to the lumber woods at Spiritwood Farm. After a month they went on to the Red River Valley and remained there a short time. The brothers and a companion went west to the Little Missouri River and became big game hunters of antelope, deer and mountain sheep, and buffalo. They abandoned the business in the spring because they found they could not preserve the meat fresh and did not want to hunt for hides alone. Joseph then took charge of the remnant of the Grange ranch stock.

In 1883, Joseph Ferris was guide for Teddy Roosevelt who came from NY to hunt buffalo along the Montana/North Dakota line. Joseph Ferris then became a mercantile merchant and postmaster for 20 years at Medora, ND. After disposing of his mercantile interests, Joseph settled in Sidney, MT, where he spent six or more years as a merchant. Then he began ranching at Malta, MT, but after a brief period he sold his stock for a good profit and went out of business. In Nov 1918, Joseph moved to Terry, MT, where he retired.

On 27 Jan 1886, Whites Cove, New Brunswick, Joseph A. Ferris married Miss Lillie S.S. Robertson, one of two children of Samuel B. and Ellen (Gibson) Robertson. Her brother was Charles M. Robertson of White's Cove, NB.

Ferris children: Arnold Douglas (Sidney, MT); Carrie Ethel (Mrs. Wilbert Brubaker, died Terry, MT, 4 Oct 1918).

A biography of Arnold Douglas Ferris is included in this biography of Joseph A. Ferris.
