Hawkins County, TN Ferrell obits
I have been working to extract all the obituaries from my Ferrell Files to share with anyone interested. All the following obits are either direct descendants of John and Elizabeth Ferrell of Hawkins County, TN or were married into, or somehow related to the family. If you have any info on these people or have additional obituaries for the family, I would be very interested in those. These obits have been collected over years by many many sources, and I apologize in advance if I have not noted their source.

Lyle Luttrell Obit
Lyle K. Luttrell, a shortstop who played briefly in the major leagues with the Washington Senators in 1956 and '57 and who is best remembered as the first player to successfully bring suit against another player for injuries suffered during an on-the-filed fight, died July 11 in a Chattanooga hospital following a heart attack. He was 54.
Playing with Chattanooga in 1955, Luttrell suffered a broken jaw when he was struck by a pitch from Little Rock's Gene Host in May. Disabled until late June, Luttrell was back in the lineup and playing against Nashville in a mid-August game when he was hit in the midsection by a pitch from Gerry Lane after dodging three brushback pitches. Luttrell reacted by throwing the bat in the general direction of the mound.
Nashville catcher Earl Averill Jr. then hit Luttrell in the back of the head with his fist, knocking the infielder unconscious. When he fell, Luttrell's jaw struck the ground, and it was fractured in the same spot as the May break.
Luttrell was hospitalized with a concussion. Averill was jailed on an assault charge following the incident, which precipitated a bench-clearing brawl. Averill was suspended for 10 days and never appeared in another Southern League game. He was shifted to Indianapolis and later caught in the major leagues for five different clubs between 1956 and 1963.
Luttrell sued the catcher and the Nashville club for $50, 000 in actual and punitive damages. A Hamilton County (Tenn.) circuit court jury [Page Cut Off]

Charles H. Kueper, a former Green Beret from Cahokia, died of lung cancer on Friday (March 5, 1993), five weeks after he lost a nationally publicized court battle against tobacco giant R.J. Reynolds.
St. Clair County Coroner Rick Stone said Kueper died at his home at 3:40 a.m. He was 51.
Mr. Kueper attributed his cancer to more than 30 years of smoking Winston cigarettes. He sued their manufacturer, the R.J. Reynolds Tobacco Co., and the Washington-based Tobacco Institute, accusing them of conspiring to hide or mislead the public about the hazards of smoking.
His attorney, Bruce N. Cook of Belleville, said Mr. Kueper knew that if he had won the case, he would not have lived to collect. Cook said Kueper had sued to help his family and to seek justice against the cigarette industry.
On Jan. 29, after a 10-week trial and 14 hours of deliberations, a jury in circuit court in Belleville awarded Mr. Kueper nothing. But jurors praised him for his courage and honesty.
Although Cook charged the industry with conspiring to hook his client and millions like him on cigarettes, Mr. Kueper testified frankly that he had smoked voluntarily, knowing the risks.
He said he had tried repeatedly to quit but was unable to do so until about two years ago after his wife, Patricia, began suffering from emphysema. Her illness struck shortly before his cancer was diagnosed.
The night of the verdict, Cook said he had no regrets about his loss of hundreds of thousands of dollars on the nationally publicized case. "Just getting to know Charlie made it all worth it," he said.
Even opposing lawyers acknowledged that they admired him.
Recently, Mr. Kueper was under the care of the Hospice of Southern Illinois.
He was born and reared in the Springfield, Ill., area and joined the Army at 17, after graduating from high school.
He became a paratrooper and then a member of the elite Special Forces, or Green Berets. During the Vietnam War, he served two combat tours in Vietnam and one in Thailand.
After retiring from the Army as a master sergeant, Mr. Kueper worked for a pipeline company and as a truck driver. From 1984 until late last year, he was a driver for the Vertex Chemical Corp., based in Dupo.
Among those surviving, in addition to his wife, are daughters Tricia L. Kueper of Scott Air Force Base and Kelli Renee Dodd Kueper of Clifton Park, N.Y.; sons John Kueper of Savannah, Ga., Charles H. Kueper Jr. of Fenton, and Jeffrey M. Kueper of Cahokia; his mother, Elva Kueper of Springfield, Ill., and father, John Kueper of Huachuca City, Ariz.; sisters Rena Kueper of Midland, Texas, and Louise Baker of Springfield, Ill.; a brother, Paul Kueper of Huachuca City, Ariz.; four grandchildren, and a close friend, Verlin Haslett of Lebanon.
Funeral services are private, under the direction of the Dashner Funeral Home in Dupo. Burial will be in the David Brunk Family Cemetery in Springfield.
Memorial contributions may be made to the Hospice of Southern Illinois or to the Brunk Cemetery.
Charles Kueper, Tobacco Suit Plaintiff, 51
Published: March 7, 1993
Charles Kueper, who five weeks ago lost a liability suit in which he charged that the tobacco industry was responsible for his lung cancer, died on Friday at his home in this town near St. Louis. He was 51.
The office of the St. Clair County coroner confirmed that the cause of death was lung cancer.
Mr. Kueper, a truck driver who smoked a pack and a half of Winston cigarettes a day for most of his adult life, contended in his suit that Winston's maker, the R. J. Reynolds Company, and the industry's trade association, the Tobacco Institute, had conspired to use deceptive advertising to conceal the dangers of smoking. But on Jan. 29, after a 10-week trial, a jury in St. Clair County Circuit Court cleared the defendants.
Mr. Kueper is survived by his wife, Patricia, and six children.

A 4-year-old Justin boy died Friday after the car his mother drove was hit by a pickup running a red light, police said.
John W. Bulman was taken by helicopter ambulance to Cook Children's Medical Center but died around 11 a.m. Friday, a little more than an hour after the accident at State Highways 114 and 170, said David Miller, director of public safety for Trophy Club and Westlake.
John's mother, Renee Bulman, was in serious condition at Harris Methodist Fort Worth hospital Friday evening, Chief Miller said. He did not know the extent of her injuries.
The driver of the green Chevrolet pickup, a 23-year-old Dallas man, was admitted at Harris Methodist, but Chief Miller said he was conscious and alert.
A hospital spokeswoman did not return phone calls inquiring about the two drivers' conditions.
The pickup was traveling west on Highway 170 and slammed into the driver's side of Ms. Bulman's Mercury Grand Marquis, witnesses told police. Police said John wore a seat belt, but it is unknown whether Ms. Bulman wore one.
