Today at Kew I had a fantastic stroke of luck. I was looking at the 1901 census fiche for Kings Bromley for another name in my family tree and spotted William Ferneyhough and his wife Maria. There were three Harris stepchildren and one year old Frank Ferneyhough.
When I got home, I checked the 1881 census and found William and his wife Mary Jane in Burton-on-Trent. I also had a record of the 1901 census for Lichfield and there again was William and Mary Jane, but this time, with five children as follows:
1. Edith Jane Ferneyhough born Burton in 3Q 1875 (the quarter has been gleaned from the births index.
2. William Ferneyhough born Burton 3Q 1878
3. Lizzie Ferneyhough born Burton 4Q 1882
4. Mary Ferneyhough aged 6 born Alrewas (no entry found in the births index.
5. Fred Ferneyhough born Lichfield 4Q 1886
Mary Jane Ferneyhough died in 2Q 1894 at the age of 38.
It looks to me as if the Mary above is the one you are looking for. None of these children are with their father and his new wife in the 1901 census.
I hope this helps.
I could not find Dorothy in the births index. The only girl registered in Birmingham in the year and quarter you quote is Violet. Do you think she was registered with a different name? It seems to me to be highly unlikely.
