Hi Sarah!
I couldn't get much info from my grandfather on Charles. He was named after his grandfather Fernald.
I was told he died from his wounds in the battle to retake Manila. My grandfather said that there was a machine gun nest and that he was struck down by bullets. But his brother Phil said that it was a handgrenade and it blew off half of his face.
I saw a picture of Charles. I wanted to scan it, but Great Uncle Phil wouldn't let me borrow it. He did let me have 2 letters Amber had written to Charles, but were returned because of his demise. I'll have to look for them.
