Florence,
André Ferland emigrated from St-Vincent de Maillerais in the Poitou region of France in the early seventeenth century, changing his name from Fellan to Ferland. It's not known if this change was intentional, as many immigrants to the New World did, or if it was just a typo, as happened a lot in those days. But the fact that André Ferland was sent to Île D'Orléans (an island to the north of Québec City, the oldest city in North America) as a clerc certainly supports the idea that the change was not a typo.
André Ferland had two sons, François and Jean-Baptiste, who received each a plot of land in the village of Ste-Famille on the Île D'Orléans. The plots are still marked by a plaque today in recognition for the founding families of Canada.
There is a later branch of Ferland who came from Ireland, but I don't have any specific information on that branch.
If you're still monitoring this forum please post a message and I'll take the time to look through an extensive genealogy study that my family had prepared several years ago. Chances are that Philip Henry Ferland is from the Île D'Orléans branch.
