Court record concerning the granddaughter of George Fenwick

Here is an interesting court record that may be relevant:

"Elizabeth Cullick, daughter of Capt. John Cullick, late Decd, chooses James Richards and Lt. Thomas Bird to be her Guardians." from Manwaring, "Hartford CT Probate Records," quoting a court record (probably the Particular Court of CT) page 63, 11 May 1667.

Elizabeth Cullick, the dau. of John Cullick and Elizabeth Fenwick, was b. 15 Jul 1652 in Hartford, according to Barbour. She would have been 15 at the time of the court case. She m. Benjamin Batten in Oct 1671 (age 19), according to both Barbour and Torrey.

Elizabeth Fenwick was m. to John Cullick 20 May 1648, according to Torrey. Also according to Torrey, she later married Richard Ely in 1664, but in Boston.

James Richards lived in Hartford, but Thomas Bird (Jr.) was from Dorchester (near Boston,) the son of the immigrant to that town. Was she moving back and forth? That would seem unlikely, considering the era and the difficulty of travel in 1667.

The custody case of 1667 raises an intriguing question; why would Elizabeth (Fenwick) (Cullick) Ely, who was remarried in 1664, be unable to care for her child in 1667? She lived until 1683, dying in Lyme, CT. (Richard Ely died in 1684.)
