John, Tnanks for the quick reply and the additional details. Anne had five broathers and sisters, including a John. I do no know for sure if he was a competitive horseman, but it would not surprise me. As I mentioned, his father was a horse dealer in Rathkeale, and horses seemed to be of interest to most of the males in the family. My great aunt told me that one of her father's brothers (probably Maurice, Annie's father) raised or trained horses for Lord Dunraven, who had a large estate up the road from Rathkeale in Adare. Dunraven had contracts with the British Army to supply horses. In those days it was big business. Dunraven supplied horses for Lord Kitchener's campaign in Egypt/Sudan. My great grandfather and his brother accompanied the horses on their journey to Egypt. It was a rough trip, with storms along the way. When my great grandfather got to Egypt, he returned home asap, and vowed never to make such a trip again. I checked the dates this was supposed to happen against the dates of Kitchener's campaigns in the Sudan, and the timing seems right, but that is as close as I have come to verification. I have a photo of my great grandfather in his living room. Behind him is an enormous painting or print of a horse--one of Dunraven's champions according to my great aunt. She also said that when her uncle in Ireland died (she couldn't remember when) there was lots of coverage in the newspapers, even in the Irish Echo here in the US, and that the funeral was attended by many notables. My uncle in Florida may remember the Keatings-I will email him and ask what he knows. In the meatime, here is the list of Annie Fennell's siblings: John b. 11 Nov. 1889, d. Jan 12, 1970 Michael, b. 5 Feb. 1891, d. 16 Dec. 1964 Thomas, b. 1893, d 9 June 1935 Maurice b. 7 Dec. 1895, emigrated to Australia Helene, b. 24 April 1899, married an O'Shaugnessy in the US Maria, b. 10 April 1904 Although the sisters married, none had children. The boys all married and have descendants in Ireland and England. I am not sure about Maurice, since he went to Australia, and I have not tried to track him there. I have an extensive family tree for the Rathkeale Fennells-probably more than you would ever want to know, but I would be happy to send it to you if you want. I suspect Annie socialized with her sister who married the O'Shaugnessy--do you have any info on this connection? Any details and pictures you would be willing to share would be more than welcome.
