Dear Anita, The earliest record of Humphrey Felts is the Tithable List that was taken in 1674, which I might add continued through 1704.The various spellings of the name leave a lot to be desired, 1.Surry County Tithable (white) June 10, 1674 - Humphrey Felps2.Surry County Tithable (white) June, 1678 - Hump Felps 3.Surry County Tithable (white) June, 1688 - Humphrey ffelks4.Surry County Tithable (white) June10, 1694 - Humphrey Felks 5. Surry County Tithable (white) 1698 - Humphrey Felps - and - William Felps 6.Surry County Tithable (white) June 10, 1702 in Southwark Parrish - Humphrey Phelps, Sr. Humphrey Phelps, William Phelps and Richard Phelps * Noted all living on same land. As you can tell the spelling is ragged in so many places. This places Humphrey in Surry in 1674 and at least 18 years old, which the birth date was calculated to 1656. These Tithable lists came from the Surry County, Virginia, Courthouse. The ca Birth list for his sons, William, Humphrey, Jr. and Richard were also based on the age of 18, and showing up on the tithable list. William, being the oldest, Humphrey, second and Richard, third eldest, I wondered why, Elizabeth City, N.C. then I noticed the Black Water River flowing to the Elizabeth City, area. They followed the River.Jim Jones
