JOHN R FELTER, who is buried in Crystal Cemetery near Garwin Iowa, enlisted into the 14th Iowa Infantry Company G.

Felter, John Rockefeller. Age 23. Residence Buckingham, Tama County, nativity New York. Enlisted October 22, 1861. Mustered November 2, 1861. Missing in action April 6, 1862, Shiloh, Tennessee. Promoted Third Corporal April 12, 1863; Second Corporal July 1, 1863. Mustered out November 16, 1864, Davenport, Iowa.
John Felter married Rebecca Thomas, sister of his companion in Company G, BENJAMIN F THOMAS.

Thomas, Benjamin F. Age 25. Residence Wolf Creek, Tama County, nativity Ohio. Enlisted October 9, 1861, as Third Corporal. Mustered November 2, 1861. Missing in action April 6, 1862, Shiloh, Tennessee. Promoted Fifth Sergeant April 12, 1863; Fourth Sergeant July 1, 1863. Mustered out November 16, 1864, Davenport, Iowa.
BF Thomas is buried in Buckingham Cemetery, Traer, Iowa. He was married to Sarah Stoakes, who was the sister of another Company G soldier, ELEAZAR STOAKES.
Stoakes, Eleazar. Age 26. Residence Tama County, nativity Ohio. Enlisted October 29, 1861. Mustered November. 2, 1861. Missing in action April 6, 1862, Shiloh Tennessee. Discharged November 8, 1862, St. Louis, Missouri.
Eleazar is also buried in Buckingham Cemetery, Traer Iowa.
John Felter, Benjamin Thomas and Eleazar Stoakes fought with their regiment at Fort Donelson and at the battle of Shiloh where they were part of the famous Hornets' Nest stand that saved Grant's army from destruction after delaying the Confederate advance for several hours at the cost of their own freedom. Surrounded and out of ammunition the 14th Iowa was finally forced to surrender. These men were taken to a POW camp in Macon Georgia.
During the War, John Felter's sister Rachel Felter married ELIJAH GALLION who then enlisted into the same regiment with Felter, Stoakes and Thomas.
Here is his entry from the roster of the 14th Iowa Infantry:
Gallion, Elijah. Age 21. Residence Toledo Tama County, nativity Ohio. Enlisted February 18, 1864. Mustered March 1, 1864. Wounded slightly July 15, 1864 near Tupelo, Mississippi. -- Consolidated into Company A, Residuary Battalion Fourteenth Infantry. Mustered out August 8, 1865, Davenport, Iowa.
BF Thomas kept a diary of his wartime experiences which has been now been reprinted by the Traer Iowa museum. The book details many of the experiences of all their companions in the 14th Iowa. Anyone interested in these Felter, Thomas, Stoakes and Gallion families, or in the role of Iowans in the Civil War in general might enjoy this book.
