Hi David:
This digging you do is really incredible. The stuff you are coming up amazes me. I'm wildly trying to piece it all together.
First, I am really confident that the William who married Janet Haddow is the William I am after. (I have his name showing as John William, but who knows?)(I just ordered the marriage cert for William and Janet - to see if their full names and names of parents are listed?) --- it cost me $20.00 Cdn.... so my searches are going to be limited.
The other info I have is from William's will - he left everything to his youngest son, Thomas Fell (b.12Sep1813 from your list) living at East Field Collary, Parish of Rutherglen, Co Lanark,.We don't have a date of William's death though. But I do know that William did come to Canada to live with Joseph - we have him teaching school here about 1838-1840 (wife Janet died and buried at Carluke)
For now, I'm going to assume we've got the right family. That means I now am trying to confirm who Williams parents are (or even Janet's) ... you've given me some leads.I still like the Robert and Bethia scenario. You are right the Bethia connection makes sense. But to prove it ?Though their William born in 1762 would have made him 37 yrs old at marriage. (and that seems a bit old to me... so just not sure)
The 2nd William you mentioned born Lanark in 1766 (sounds like it could be possible - making him 33 at time of marriage)
The Janet Haddows are all so close in age and distance to Carluke.... I'm stumped on that one.
William & Janet's son, Thomas you say married Margaret Spiers in Rutherglen - I can't help but think this would be right.
Son William who was the surgeon ... may prove to be something. ??Yes, would like certificate if possible... hows the best way... scanning by email... faxing.... or mailing?whatever is good for you.
I am quite sure that both brothers Joseph and Thomas graduated.Joseph from University "Glasquensis" in "obstetrics and "pharmaceuticas" on April 25, 1827.Thomas (?? we don't know)..... although I haven't seen it yet, we have a certificate on "sheepskin" .... it also confirms 5 consecutive generations of university graduates.(this could be a good lead)
Joseph is said to have been drunk on the night he rec'd his grad cert... spent the night in jail... took boat to Canada ... (he did make 7 round trips ... before settling in Burlington, Ontario)
Anyway... I can't thank you enough for all your digging. We've decided we'd like to adopt you into our family. (ha ha)
I'll keep you posted.... you can send message direct to my email .... KEF
PS hope all is going well with wedding (being father of the bride an all)
