Felch variants & name origins
My great grandmother was a Filce. I am in contact with some Filces both in the UK and in Canada who are descendants of the same family.
I suspect that this was a variant of Felch or vice versa.
I would also suggest that there are many other variants e.g. Fels, Fils, Felce, Phels, Phils, Philce, Phelce etc, and just about any other variation of similar spelling which follows from different pronunciations, particularly dialect variations, from the 19th century and earlier.
Given the above, does anybody have any idea where this surname and variants originated both locality-wise and/or on an etymological basis?
For example, fel was an old ?anglo saxon word for hill - so was this the origin of, say, the name of a Welsh or other family from a hilly region?
Or is there another obvious origin of the name which I have missed? Perhaps a village or other placename?
