Dear Dot,
My Feeney family has been in Paterson,NJ since about 1870. I don't know if they came directly to Paterson from Ireland, but all of the children were listed as "born in Ireland".
First listing I found in Paterson City Directory: Mary (widow of John) and sons Patrick, Bernard and Thomas.
Patrick (my greatgrandfather) m. Josephine O'Neill (sp?). children:Bernard and Josephine.
Bernard m. April 15, 1906 to Mary Angela Elizabeth Kane. Their children: Loretta, Bernadette, Ann Claire, Elizabeth, William, Bernard and Marion.
