Exciting news for all family sleuths!!!!!!!
The Mormon Church has now posted its entire International Genealogical Index (IGI) for USA and UK on the Internet -- along with some other info sources.
This is going to revolutionize genealogy and put many fee-charging searchers out of business.
The IGI is far from complete (it being a transcription of many, but far from all, Parish Registers) and contains many transcription errors. But it is the main source of ancestral information and an extremely valuable one.
The IGI lists christenings (not birth dates, which sometimes might be several days, weeks, or months earlier) and marriages, along with the place of baptism or marriage.
In the case of births, the name of the father is given (sometimes also with the first name of the mother).
In the case of marriages, the full maiden name of the spouse is given.
The IGI covers entries in selected parish Registers from about 1550 to about 1850. More recent entries are not yet included.
The website to visit is as follows:-
This site is brand new and not yet free of problems. In fact, the microfiche version of the IGI (or a print-out of the same) is still easier to work with. But for those without access to the microfiche IGI, this is an outstanding service.
The site has a search form on which you can enter the FEATHER surname with or without a first name. If you don't know the first name, the result will be a list of the first 100 or so FEATHER names, listed alphabetically by first name. If you simply enter an initial in the first name box, the search will not work. For some strange reason, even the list of the names which is returned is incomplete and inaccurate. To get a more complete listing, double-click the IGI Great Britain tag on the right of the search results screen.
Of course, if you know the first name and/or a particular date, you will get a shorter list of names.
To find the parentage of a FEATHER spouse, do a fresh search on her name, entering her maiden name in the first set of boxes.
Happy hunting, whether you are searching for FEATHER or other family names.
Frank Feather (ex-UK, now Canada);
P.S. I have compiled the family trees of many FEATHER families who resided in WEST YORKSHIRE. So far, my own line is traced back to a TIMOTHY FETHER (old spelling) born in 1664. I have many other branches from the 17th century and some from the 16th century. Please e-mail me directly (above) if you have particular enquiries. I will provide whatever relevant info I have collected in exchange for your own FEATHER family branch.
