Hi Randall,
Wish I had an easy answer for you but the truth is that there is some confusion about her identity.I'll show you why.
1.There were two Laura Fayard's baptised at Our Lady of the Gulf:
Laura Melanie(dau. of Casimir and Eleanore Landrieu)born Jan 21, 1874 and bpt. Apr. 5, 1874
Laura Ursule(dau. of Laurent, Jr. and Marie Emilie Carquot), born Feb. 28, 1871, bpt. Aug. 17, 1871
2.The headstone inscription at Live Oak Cem. for Laura gives her birth and death dates as born 28 Feb 1874, died 16 Jul 1951
3.One of the Laura's married Alphonse Peyroux and the other married Albert French.
4.The 1900 census of Harrison Co. says Laura French was born Jan 1874 and that Albert and Laura had been married for four years which would be c1896.I could not locate the other Laura in the 1900 census.
5.The 1910 HANCO Census find Laura Peyroux with her son Noland age 12 or born c1898.Her status is given as single.
6.In the marriage of Alphonse A. Peyroux Jr. 7 Sept. 1895 (Hancock Co. Cir. Ct.
Marriage Book H, p. 283),the record reads Laura M. Fayard
7.The marriage of Albert and Laura Fayard was recorded at St. Paul'son Jan. 6, 1896
8.Someone I have corresponded has told me that Laura Melanie is the one who married the Peyroux, which goes along with the county marriage record.
Judging by the county marriage record my correspondent seems to be correct and Laura Melanie married Alphonse Peyroux.
Going by the 1900 census which gives Laura French's birthday as Jan. 1874(the date given in Laura Melanie's baptism) Laura Melanie married Albert French.
The headstone inscription seems to combine parts of the birthdates of both Laura's.
As for Albert R. French's parentage, it is a mystery to me.
That's the best I can explain the Laura Fayard mystery. If anyone out there can set this thing straight.PLEASE tell us.
Hope this wasn't too confusing Randall.Good to hear from you.Write any time.
