I too am a supposed descendant of John Fawcett, the hymn writer. My great great great grandfather was William Burnside Fawcett who, with his family, migrated from Hillsboro, N.C. to near Toone, Tennessee (western Tn.).I am just beginning my search of this line, and do not have many dates, but I do have a little information from a cousin a couple of times removed. She had written a little booklet that had the following information about John Fawcett:
John Fawcett
1740-1817
"Blest be the tie that binds,
Our hearts in Christian love,
The fellowship of kindred minds
Is like to that above"
So wrote Joh Fawcett, the eighteenth century British Baptist pastor, whose tie to his small congregation in Wainsgate, England "bound" him for fifty years.
Once, because of his growing family and the meager pay at Wainsgate, he decided to accept of a larger, more prestigious church in London. With part of his books and their furniture sold, and the rest packed in the wagon, he and his wife relented and agreed to stay, despite the inadequate salary. He determined to minister where he was loved and needed, trusting God for the material needs of his family.
He was able to respond to the needs of the community because he and his family knew Godly contentment in humble circumstances.Fawcett wrote several volumes of poetry, prose, and hymns during his long ministry. In 1811 he was awarded an honorary doctor's degree from Brown University.Through all these honors, he continued to live modestly, ministering to humble people.
