We know nothing about the the life of William FARRIS in the British Isles. We know that he was a weaver and was age 21 when he left the port of Larne in Ulster, Ireland in 1767 with his wife Mary (last name unknown) age 26. They arrived in Charlestown, SC on 12 Jan 1768. We know they sailed in a "snow" type ship that held about 200 passengers. We know that the name of the ship was "James & Mary", the name of its Captain as John Moore (Master) and the names of the other passengers. This is all from a 1939 book by Janie Revill called: "A Compilation of the Original Lists of Protestant Immigrants to South Carolina, 1763 - 1773", pages 101 & 103. There are no children listed for William & Mary FARRIS. We also know that he was granted a small amount of money and a 200 acre plot of land in an area North of Columbia, SC. We know that they were instructed in the catechism by Rev. John Simpson, pastor of the Fishing Creek Presbyterian Church on 08 Feb 1755 (1775?). This Church still exists as a small country Church. I have contacted this Church, but have thus far learned nothing new. Pamela Seiler and Daniel Troublefield (Dan is a FARRIS, but not of my FARRIS line, as far as we both know) were very helpful in sharing information with me that is incorporated in the above short summary. In early SC records, their name is sometimes listed as FARICE, FARIS, FARRIS and PHEARYS. I am searching for information on my William FARRIS' life & ancestry in Ulster, the rest of Ireland or in Scotland. In particular, I would like to find at least their marriage record which may give me a locale and I hope the names of both sets of their parents which should give us Mary's maiden name. If this is successful, I can try to take their ancestry back further. Any help will be appreciated. John A. Farris Albuquerque, NM, USA Notify Administrator about this message?
