Rest in Peace
Sister Clare Farren died peacefully in the Columban sister's Motherhouse,Magheramore on October 1st 2011. She was 91 years old.
From Malin,Co.Donegal,Sister Clare joined the Columban Sisters in Cahiracon,Co Clare in 1940.
After making her First Vows in 1942 she trained as a nurse before being sent on mission to Burma.Her brief spell there ended when she was sent to Hong Kong two years later to nurse tubercular patients with the Sisters in the Ruttonjee Sanatorium.Hard working and dedicated to the poor,she found it hard to leave this vibrant mission after 5 years to go to the other side of the world and be infirmarian to the Columban seminarians in Silver Creek,NY.
Her next mission assignment was to Korea where she oversaw the building of a hospital and set up a training school for nurses.
With her remarkable energy and her organizational ability she was able to help hundreds of people,especially the poor who were always her primary concern.
The Zeal that characterized her was seen too in her ministry in Scotland in the nineties when she diligently searched out those who had left the church and helped them to return to the practice of their faith.Always direct in manner,she nevertheless showed a great kindness especially to people on the fringe. Her last decade was spent in Magheramore where,ever an active member of the community,she prepared to meet the lord whom she had served so well with a quite and peaceful heart.
