You are correct that the name originates from Longford. Longford itself means 'fortress' in old Gaelic. The town was known for many years as Longfuirt ui Fairchealleigh (Farrelli's Fortress) for many years in the 11th and 12th centuries. The clan themselves were known lay preaching warriors who took part in the Crusades as mercanaries. Unfortunately the transition to Ferrall is unknown to me, but I hope to have been some use in your research.
