My great grandfather John Farrell married Jane Conroy on July 28, 1850 in the Immaculate Conception Church in Waterbury, CT. This event is documented in Anderson's History of Waterbury book and in the Barbour Collection of New England births, deaths, and marriages up to 1850. Oddly enough, when I contacted the archivist at the Archdiocese of Hartford. She informed me that no record of this marriage exists in their archives, and furthermore, there was no record of the baptism of their first child Elizabeth who was born in 1851. Needless to say that I was disappointed with the response that I have received from the Archdiocese's Archives office.
Now I am trying to get accurate dates for the death of Jane (Conroy) Farrell in 1858 and the date of John Farrell's second marriage to Anne Bergin, which had to occur either late in 1858 or early in 1859. Their first child was Sarah A. Farrell, who is listed as 10 months old in the 1860 census which was taken in July of that year. Sarah's birth would have to be some time in late August or early September of 1859. Sarah is not listed in the 1870 census so I assume that she died as a young child during the 1860's decade. I scanned all the microfilmed copies of the Waterbury American Weekly newspapers for the years 1858 and 1859 and their is no mention of any Farrell death, marriage, or birth. I also understand that birth, death, and marriage records at the Town Clerk's Office, which go back prior to 1888, were destroyed in a fire at the old city hall.
Any suggestions that you have regarding my quest for accurate dates would be most appreciated.
