I believe we exchanged e-mails a couple years ago. Anyway my GGGrandfather Lawrence O'Farrell left Longford County in 1823 and settled in Prince Edward Island Canada. His grandson, my grandfather, decided to drop the "O".
Years ago I asked the same questions on the spelling of the name "Farrell". I had chanced upon the "Spinning Wheel" records from 1798 (or there abouts) from Longford County(I found them in a LDS Libray in Ottawa Canada). As I understand it, individuals wanted to increase the production of textiles or such in the county and therefore issued complementary spinning wheels to heads of households. They of course kept records of the issue and thus the "Spinning Wheel" record. For Longford County, these records had many different spellings for "Farrell", of which my name "Farrell" was the most common. In an attempt to determine which part of Longfrod County my GG Grandfather came from I took all the names and plotted them as best I could on a map Of Longford County.(I could do this because of the parish names). In the end (from what I recall) the spelling of "Farrell" was most common in the North of Longford County (in and around the Towns of Longford and Granard) and the spelling of "Ferrell" was most common in the South of the County.
I really do not know why but this appeared to be the case.
