Just out of interest,as I understand it my GGrandfather Denis was O'Farrell before 1851 when he enlisted in Birr, having been advised by elder brother John so to do. The loss of the O' is one of the problems I have in putting a trace on Denis's father Arthur O'Farrell combined with the problem of knowing where they lived. I don't know if you want more details of your GUncle Thomas in WW1, but I recall O'Farrells on both the Menin Gate and Thiepval monuments so the Commonwealth War Graves Commissions website may be of help, but if you have his Regiment, then Army records centre and PRO at Kew are good sources.I have sucessfully tracked my GFathers army career from 1898 to 1920's that way.
