Although I tend to agree with the follow up posted by Steve Farrell, and the army pay system, ( I agree very Irish), my grandfather was very, very particular about it being Farrell and with an 'O' in front, it was always , "it's O'Farrell!"
I have, in my family history research, discovered that one of his siblings was known as Farrell - she was a member of a Hampshire convent.
My Great-Grand-Father Thomas came over the England and married an English girl and settled in the Surrey area of England near where I still live.
Two of their sons emigrated to Canada in the first part of the 20th century before WW1, moving later into the United States where I know at least one of them had a daughter who would be about 79 - 80 years old now.
If any of this rings bells with anyone I can supply names.
My Grand-Father was called Henry and he died before I was born, he had two children, my Father, William and a daughter Julia.
One of his brothers was called William after which my Dad was named.
The brothers had an older sibling Thomas, a professional soldier who died in WW1.
