Just to add another twopennorth from a 2nd generation English born Farrell - I think the Ferrall/Farrell debate hinges on two things - Accent and Literacy. Depeding on how hard or soft you pronounce your 'A's is one element and remembering that the O'Fearghal/Farrell clan were poor uneducated folk in the main in the 17th/18th centuries and records were dependent on the hearing and accent of educated scribes. Does it matter? Another slant on the loss of the 'O' from my family's anecdotes is that it is reputed to stem from O'Farrells joining the British Army from end of 18th Century. The British Army paid the ranks 1 week-A-M Surnames(first 13 of alphabet) -2nd week N-Z (second 13 of alphabet) Hence if you were a 'Farrell'you were paid and sent it home (or drank it?) 1 week before an O'Farrell and there's something very Irish about that!?!.
