Hi Bruce:
Per your request. Nicholas Farrar is not an ancestor of Councillor William fferrar of Va (1618, Neptune). Best bet is that he is a 2nd or 3rd cousin twice or thrice removed.
The erroneous belief that Nicholas was an ancestor, or uncle of William fferrar (spelling is the Jamestown Muster of 1624/25 spelling, ff was the 17th Century capitalization), was first promulgated by Rev Timothy Farrar in his Farrar family memoirs, then perpetuated by the Virginia Magazine of History and Biography.
Thanks to Alvan Holmes yeowoman work, her diligence has proven the lineage of William fferrar (my 9th great grandfather), to John Farrar and Sissley Kelke, then to William Farrar and Margaret Lacey and finally to Henry Ferror and Agnes (Horsfalls). I put Horsfalls in parantheses
because there is no documentation of her maiden name.
The name Horsfalls was given to her by someone, on the basis of the 1549 Will of Henry Ferror of Eawood Manor, Midgley, Halifax Parish, West Riding Yorkshire as a John Horsfalls was named as a supervisor of the will, along with John Ferror of Elffaburghe, and his sons William Ferror and Henry Ferror, a witness to the will was John Ferror of Averode.
The Ferror/Farrar/Farrers of West Riding Yorkshire were ubiquitous, and in fact throughout the midland counties, then and now, even unto Lancashire.
As were other families like Lacey's and Horsfall, all of them wealthy textile merchants and landlords thanks to the protectionist laws of Henry VII.
There was another Henry Farrar (Farrer) he died (will proved 1541) leaving his Boithe (Booth)in St Bartholimews (Bartholemews) Fair in London, and his textile business to
his son Brian, who also married a Margaret Lacey.
Henry son of Henry and Agnes, leased land for a coal mine to an Abraham Shaw. John Farrar, brother of William fferrar of Va, sold the family hunting lodge at Westwood in Surrey to Robert Terry in 1643. John was living at Westwood during the 1623 visitation by the King's Herald, his and Williams brother Henry was living at Great Amwell Hall, Hertfordshire during the 1634 visitation by the King's Herald.
In 1631 William with wife Cecily and children, voyaged to
London, to settle his inheritance from his father John Farrar. He sold to Henry and brother John his portion of the inheritance including any claim on the estate of Great Amwell Hall.
I of course have copies of the documents mentioned and more.
I encourage you to order and read The Farrar Island Family and it's English Ancestry, as well as Some Farrar Island Descendants, you can order them here:The first will clear up the error as regards Nicholas Farrar.
