Unfortunately I have not encountered any Farr's that were Farrar's or vice Versa. Farr is Celtic in origin, the name is found predominantly in Wales and Scotland (google Farr Stone) for example. This map shows the 1881 distribution of the name Farr in the British Isles: http://gbnames.publicprofiler.org/Map.aspx?name=FARR&year=1881&altyear=1998&country=GB&type=namehttp://gbnames.publicprofiler.org/Map.aspx?name=FARR&year=1881&altyear=1998&country=GB&type=name
This map shows the distribution of the Farrars in the 1881 British Census http://gbnames.publicprofiler.org/Map.aspx?name=FARRAR&year=1881&altyear=1998&country=GB&type=namehttp://gbnames.publicprofiler.org/Map.aspx?name=FARRAR&year=1881&altyear=1998&country=GB&type=name
You will notice in a comparison, that there is no overlap between the Farr's and Farrar's, that the Farrar's are concentrated around Yorkshire.
I've seen the entries in the American dictionary of names that assert that Farr, Varey, Fairey, Farrow, etc are all derivations or hyper corrected forms of Farrar.
This is nonsense as born out by DNA studies. The DNA of William Farrar, who migrated to Jamestown in 1618 is R1a1, old Norse, (Danish Viking/Norman), Farrows, Farr's etc are R1b1b2 (aboriginal Brit) there is at least one Farrar that has Pictish DNA, but that could be a false paternal event or an adoption back before 1700 in England.
The pronounciation of the name Farrar was influenced in Virginia by the influx of immigrants from Wessex and Sussex, (whose peculiar dialect was outlawed by King James, but survived in Virginia and became what we call the southern drawl). I have southern roots, but have military service and as a consequence I pronounce it like the military did, Far Rar, my kin pronounce it a Fairuh, (my grandmother as Fire)
some in the south as Farruh or Farroh, Farrow. Thus in my line, my 3rd and 2nd great granfathers name was spelled Farrow in Pittsylvania Co, Va documents, Greenville SC census and in Georgia (Oglethorpe and Morgan Counties),
however when they arrived in Perry Co ala between 1819 and 1829, they settled for Farrar again. However a great great uncles son reverted to Farrow, but one of his sons, Henry Hurd changed it back to Farrar, while the other sons retained Farrow.
We have in our DNA project a Farrow whose ancestor was a Farrar, and we have a Farrar whose ancestor was a Farrow.
The Farrows migrated down from Philadelphia and Baltimore to
Stafford,Faquier and Prince William County Virginia in the north of Virginia.
The Farrars started out in Henrico Co, Va in the 17th Century and migrated south and west.
There were Farrows in the coastal Counties of NC, Pharoah Farrow was a lighthouse keeper in Currituck County and a Capt of Militia at the Cowpens. It is believed that these Farrows(in Chowan and Currituck County) are descendants of a Farrow who was a member of the lost Roanoke Colony.
And the Lost Colony DNA project, as well as Lumbee colony solicits Farrows of NC origin to join their project at www.familytreedna.com,Roberta Estes, project manager of above also manages the Hatteras Fathers project (Hatteras Island was the Croatan Island to which the Roanoke settlers moved when they vanished
http://www.familytreedna.com/public/HatterasFathers/default.aspxhttp://www.familytreedna.com/public/HatterasFathers/default.aspx
I have no knowledge or record of any Farrar living in Columbia or Upson Co, Ga.
There were two Farrar families that migrated to Georgia.
The Family of Absalom Farrar born in Mecklenburg Co Va in 1764, married Mildred Avery widow Howard, and died 1855 in Henry Co Va. His descendants are fairly well accounted for.
And my family which arrived in Oglethorpe Co circa 1797 from Greenville Co, SC and before that Pittsylvania Co, Va and before that Goochland Co, Va Brothers and cousins descended from Richard Farrar and Elizabeth Sanders, son of William Farrar IV and Sarah Farrar his cousin.
If you can provide me (I suggest using my email address, click on my name above, it will reveal my email addy)
the full name, approx date of birth of Jesse Farr, his date of death and marriage if known and the name of his wife I can check my data base.
I do have a Jesse Farrar in Georgia. But Jesse was not an unusual name.
Do you have any relatives with the surname Farr who could be convinced to join a DNA project at www.familytreedna.com.
