Hi Folks, I'm trying to find out what the relationship was between Col. John Egbert Farnum, (April 1, 1824-May 16, 1870) and Col. Francis Murray Wynkoop of Pottsville, Pa. According to Appleton's Cyclopedia of American Biography, John was born in New Jersey to James Farnum and his wife, whose maiden name was Cook. However, his obituary, published in the New York Courier Newspaper, May 22, 1870, states that he was born in Charleston, South Carolina on October 1st, 1824. He was married twice, the first time to unknown, by whom he had a daughter, name also unknown. He married a second time, on June 30th, 1868, to Miss Fannie Ray. They had no children. His obituary lists Frank Wynkoop as a relative and I have a letter from Frank, written during the Mexican War, to his Uncle Henry Wynkoop that refers to him familiarly as Egbert and sends him the news that Egbert is doing well. Frank's father was John Wanshaer Wynkoop and his mother's maiden name was Estill. Hoping you can help me solve this mystery. Many thanks, Chris Wynkoop Wayne, Pa.
