James Farnan (Firnin, Farmen) in Montreal (Quebec)

I am trying to find out where one of my ancestors comes from, and the date he and his family left England for Canada. His name was written Farnan in some register but I saw also Firnin, Furman, and Farman elsewere. What I know is this : He was born in Ireland in 1826, and married Caroline Richard (b. 1823 in England) around 1845-1850, probably in England as the children appearing in the 1881 Canadian Census are declared as being born in England : Elizabeth (b. 1851) Eliza Alma (b. 1858), Mary (b. 1861). Another child (Caroline b. 1863) is said to be born in Ontario Province (Canada). That would mean that they arrived first in Ontario, or maybe in the United States. They might have had other children, but they were not appearing in their household. On the 1881 Canadian Census, they are living in Montreal (Ste-Anne, Quebec Province). In the 1901 Canadian Census, their children are still found in Montreal, although I haven't found James and Caroline (yet). If anyone could help me with this puzzle, or at least, indicate to me where to search for emigration registers (if they exist) for that period. I am interested also with the name of the ship they came on. (Passengers lists are practically non-existing before 1865 in Canada). The names of James and Caroline parents would help, of course, as I could not find their death certificate to guide me. On the documents I found, it is said that they immigrated in 1862. This is all I know so far.

Any help will be greatly appreciated.
