Alexander Faires lived in York Co SC and fought in the Revolutionary War where he was a trooper in Sumpter's Army. The book Tradition and Reminiscences tells how he was captured after killing one of Cornwallis' dragoons, and himself receiving a saber cut across the face. He was severely wounded and captured at Fishing Creek. The second night he escaped and hid in the Indian Hook Hills, York Co. His wife nursed him until he was able to join Sumpter at Charlotte, NC.
He is buried at Old Unity Cemetary in Fort Mill SC. When I visited it recently I was saddened to see his stone broken in half and barely readable. I am starting a fund to buy a new stone. If you are interested in contributing to the fund or would like to talk with me about Alexander Faires or his descendants, please call me at 704-529-0720 or E-mail at ANNABORT88@CAROLINA.RR.COM
