As a Fanning/Fannin/Fannon researcher, came across this info in Quaker records on a Thomas Fanning at the Western Branch MM, Nansemond, Co.(also Surry & Sussex Cos), VA. With the early time frame of your William moving to OH (as did many Quaker families) and the appearance that some of his children married Quakers or those related to Quakers, this info could possibly be of help in solving what Fanning clan your William descends from.

The Western Branch MM was established in 1737, but the records are missing from 1778 to 1807.

1/24/1807 - Thomas Fanning represented WBPM (Preparative)
10/27/1810 - T. Fanning treasurer of WBMM
3/27/1813 - T. Fanning reported married to Elizabeth Jordan
4/24/1813 - T. Fanning suffered seizure of his property for muster fines; seizure made by Demsey Douglas, deputy of Jeremiah Godwin, sheriff of Nansemond Co., VA.
7/25/1818 - T. Fanning, clerk of, in place of Robert Jordan
4/24/1819 - T. Fanning fined for refusing to attend musters, collected by Joseph Denson, deputy of Josiah Murdaugh, sheriff of Nansemond Co., VA

These records suggest that Thomas Fanning was probably not a real young person in 1807. No records of childrens births after his marriage in 1813 so this may not have been his first marriage. Nor did I find any records on Thomas or Elizabth after 1819 which seems strange as normally, if they are going to leave the area they get a paper to take to the new monthly meeting which would have been in the records. But if they did not move, their deaths, expulsion and etc would have been recorded in the monthly meeing minutes.

Bryant Fanning, Sr, and his clan were in the Surry/Sussex Cos., VA, area from c1725. None were Quakers as far as I know, but this is not my Fanning clan. There was also a William Fanning in early VA records.
