Laughlin's service is documented in a book "Revolutionary War Records of MEchlenburg County (VA)
P. 27 Thomas Brandon reported to have served under CAptain Richard Swepson, Lt. John Clay and Ensign Laughlin Fanning"marched to Yorktown and at the surrender"
Hutchins Burton servedunder Col. William Lucas, Capt Richard Swepson, Lt. John Clay and Ens. Laughlin Fannin "for the southern campaigns"
Fannin. Laughlin Took oath of militia officer Oct.12, 1778- Order Book 4, p. 442
P. 165 List of officers found in order book of Mecklenburg Co. Lieut. Laughlin Fanning
P.177 Court Order 12 Oct. 1778 Laughlin Fanning, an officer of the militia in this ounty took the oath of an officer as required by law, Order Book 4, P. 442
It is also reprted in several pension requests images of which are included on Footnote.com. They identify him as a Ensign serving under a Lt. John clay in the militia in 1780 in Mechlenburg or Halifax Co. VA. They apparently marched to Hillsborough to join up with General Gates just before the battle of Camden and later engagements in North Carolina and Virginia. The application mention the unit being at Yorktown. No place does it give a unit number.
Wish I could help more.
Tom
