I believe that your James, Sr. is the son of Abraham and Nancy Galloway Fanning. Try searching the Morgan County, IL rootsweb site. The 1878 Morgan County History is available at their site, including the section on James, Sr. and his family:

Abraham is one of the many children of Joseph and Barbara Davis Fanning. I'm sure you will find lots of relatives and fellow Morgan County researchers in this Fanning forum. My direct Fanning ancestor is Robert Fanning (wife Mary McCurley), whom I believe to be a nephew of Joseph and Barbara Davis Fanning.

The Morgan County rootsweb site also has other resources online, including the 1850-1870 census listings, other county histories, etc.
