Walter Brook's Book

I have the Brook's book. My mother's maiden name was Fanning. James Fanning was my 7th ggf. Here's what the book has: Born at Stonington, Conn, 30 April, 1695 (per Stonington Town Records). The Stonington Church Records give the date of bap. as 12Aug,1694. The footnote indicates that the actual dob is more likely to be 30 April 1694 vs. 1695. James married 1st Hannah Smith, dau. of Richard and Hannah (Tooker) Smith. Hannah was born at Smithtown, L.I. in 1703. She died on her passage home from England 10 Sept., 1750, in her 48th year, and is buried at Riverhead, L.I. James 2nd wife was the widow Thankful Hinckley Chesebrough. Captain James Fanning was the son of Thomas and Frances (Ellis)Fanning. He took an active part in the French and Indian War in 1746. He died in the town of Southold, Suffolk Co., NY in June 1779, age 84 years. The "Salmon Record" states that he died 15 April, 1779. His tombstone is known as the "Riverhead Tombstone", and erroneously gives the date of death as 1776 in his 93rd year.
Hope this helps. Debbie Soreff, Lynn, MA (email: [email protected])
