I do believe it is clear that Joseph Fannin (b. ca.1802) was married to Elizabeth Kitchen in 1822 before he married Rachel Easterling.I don't know when he married Rachel Easterling. I am not certain if Elizabeth died early or divorced Joseph and married Hiram Spillman, as some suggest. What I do know is that Joseph was already married to Rachel Easterling by 1839 because that is the year Joseph & Rachel's daughter Sarah Fannin (later Sarah Prater) was born.
What I am wondering is if there wasn't another marriage for Joseph Fannin before Elizabeth. There may be a possibility that Joseph married as a young man to the "unnamed daughter" of Thomas Easterling before he married Elizabeth Kitchen. Then, after Elizabeth, he married Rachel Easterling, who might be a sister to Joseph's first wife - the unnamed Easterling.
The 1830 Lawrence Co.,Ky Census has the following:
Joseph Fannon
Males:
1 under 5 years
2 5-10 years
1 20-30 years
Females:
1 under 5 years
1 20 -30 years
According to this there were three male children and 1 female child in the household in 1830. These same children would be at least 20 years old in 1850. Yet, in the 1850 Census, Joseph Fannin has only one child at home age 20 or more and that is his son, Achillis. The 1850 census shows us that Achilles was born ca. 1829. He would therefore be the one male under 5 years listed in the 1830 census.
Therefore, there are two sons born between 1820 & 1825 and one daughter born between 1825 & 1830 that are still unaccounted for.
I think there is a strong possibility that one of these sons was Bryant Fannin b. ca. 1825, who married Louisa Clay. (They were living next door to Joseph & Joseph's son, Isaac Fannin in Carter Co., Ky, in 1860. There is other evidence, too.)
The other son may have been Silas Fannin, who was born in 1822 and that leaves the daugther who may have been Rachel Emeline Fannin, later Burton.
I know this sounds farfetched with alot of "may have beens", but stranger things have happened.
I would be happy to discuss this more. Please contact me at [email protected].
Regards,
Pat Fannin
