Dear Tom,

I think you may have misread my last post or else I wasn't very clear, which may well be the case.

What I wrote was:
"Recent results have been received by the Fanning DNA Project that have revealed a 100% match in the 37 marker y-DNA test of a proven descendant of Welcome Fanning, Sr. (1799-1873) of Wilkes County, Ga. to the proven descendants of Achilles Fannin, Sr. (born 1728 to 1730 - died 1812) of Wythe Co., Va. This Achilles Fannin, Sr. was one of the sons of Bryan Fannin, Sr.(ca. 1695-1765) of Amelia Co., Va."

What I meant to say was that there is a 100% match in the y-DNA results of Welcome's descendant and the y-DNA results of several descendant's of Achilles, Sr., using a 37 marker test. This is an accurate statement in that the 37 markers were, in fact, a 100% match. I didn't mean for you to think that Welcome was a direct descendant of Achilles, Sr. (which he would not be). I was simply saying these test results show a relationship between Welcome Fanning & Achilles Fannin, Sr. That does not mean Achilles, Sr. was a direct ancestor of Welcome, but only that he is closely related.

These test results increase the chances for Welcome Fanning being descended from Bryan Fanning,Jr. (mind you, I said "increases the chances", but I didn't say it proved this connection). And yes, as you said this would make Welcome's dad, John, a possible nephew to Achilles, Sr., since Bryan, Jr. and Achilles,Sr. were brothers.

What I did try to point out was that Welcome Fanning is shown through this DNA to be related to Bryan, Sr., who is the Most Recent Common Ancestor to any descendants of Achilles, Sr. and Bryan, Jr.

It is now, not a question as to whether Welcome Fanning is related to Old Bryan Fannin, Sr.(which we now know that he is related to him), but just how did this relationship occur. It is most likely through one of Old Bryan Fannin's sons, but which one?

We know of Achilles, Sr.'s children through his will of 1812 and they don't fit the equation.

We know Bryan, Jr's children through Sussex County, Va. records and there is a son John, who would fit rather nicely.

We are not totally sure of all of Laughlin's children.

We know very little of Jehu's family, which could possibly include a John, who could possibly be Welcome's dad.

We know David Fannin,Sr.'s family and it doesn't qualify to be Welcome's family.

Finally there is Phillip Fannin of which we know nothing.

Stretching it a little further, Welcome's dad, John, could have been a nephew or great nephew of Old Bryan instead of a grandson, but we have no record of any of Old Bryan Fannin, Sr.'s brothers or their families.

So, not claiming an air tight case, I based my last posting on the circumstantial evidence of:

Information found in Bryan Fanning, Jr.'s will, along with
Bryan, Jr.'s brother, Laughlin Fannin, moving to Wilkes Co., Ga. (where Welcome's dad, John, appears in records at the proper time) and also considering land transactions between Bryan, Jr.'s widow, Rachel and Edward Eckles of Wilkes Co., Ga. (who is also found in Amelia Co.,Va. records)-- Bryan Faning(III), “beloved son” of Rachel Faning, was given 244 acres of land in Sussex Co., Va.on April 21, 1770 by his mother. The transaction was recorded on 20 Sept., 1770. The property had been purchased on January 19, 1769 from Edward Eccles of Georgia and James Eccles of Amelia Co.,Va. Rachael Faning(sic) & Matthew Sturdivant ( 2nd husband of Rachel Rottenberry Fanning) of Sussex County retained use of the property until Bryan Faning(III) reached the age of twenty-one years. From: Sussex Co., Va. Deed Book D Page 235 & 236 21 April, 1770, recorded 20 Sept., 1770.

In early records of Wilkes Co., Ga. there is a land transaction between Edward Eckles and wife Jane to John Clements on Long Creek. This was dated June 29, 1789 and listed John Fannin, teste. From: "Early Records of Wilkes Co., Ga." Vol. 1 Page 81 (original document page 170) by Grace Gillam Davidson. This helps establish John Fannin of Wilkes Co., Ga. with the Fannings of Sussex Co.,Va. in light of the purchase of Rachel Fanning of Sussex Co.,Va. from Edward Eccles of Georgia listed above.

In my conclusion I also considered the frequent use of the name of Bryan in John & Mary Parks Fanning's descendants and finally, I considered the y-DNA results. This, I believe, leads us to a very likely ( but not certain) conclusion that Welcome's grandparent's were Bryan & Rachel Rottenberry (Rottenbury) Fanning, Jr. of Sussex Co., Va.

I hope this has clarified my earlier posting.

I would like to share with you information on Laughlin Fannin, if you are open to it? Please let me know.

Best Regards,

Pat
