I received a note today about a genetic match from an individual inquiring about help placing his ancestor. Information that I received is as follows: >>We have traced his data back to a Charles Gordon Ames (1828-1912) who was Adopted : "Ames was born out of wedlock. Said to have been born in Dorchester, Suffolk County, MA. Birth said to be 3 Oct 1828. Until he was 21, he did not know his mother’s name. He was raised on a New Hampshire farm by rigidly Presbyterian foster parents who treated him as a hired hand and constantly reminded him of his sinful birth. Almost in desperation, Ames, at the age of 12, joined a sect called the Free Will Baptists, who gave him hope and made him feel welcome. By age 20, he had become an itinerant preacher." At age 22, after much searching, he found his mother and visited her for the first and only time. She was the granddaughter of General Henry Knox. Born in Maine, she was married and living with her husband and daughter on a farm in southern Michigan. Ames’s account of his visit to her, in a letter to his mother-in-law, is very touching. His mother was in ill health and poor economic circumstances, deeply depressed, with an unshakeable sense of sinfulness. Ames’s loving but circumspect response was to comfort her, as much as a minister as a son. We have searched the area of Dorchester, MA for a Fanning and came up empty. Had hope there was a male in the area with the surname Fanning. No luck yet. Per above, said to have found his mother but no further info on this find. Only >>that she was the granddaughter of General Henry Knox. I would have expected him to be part of Edmund's lineage because of the location however genetically he matches Bryant and Chestnut Creek John lineage. He is most closely associated with Joseph and Barbara Davis group. Can anyone place a Fanning in the area described in the correct time period? His markers are at the bottom of Lineage 1 relationship undetermined. Thanks, Cathy Notify Administrator about this message?
