It has been very difficult to find out anything about Silas Fannin’s family. I’ve researched for over thirty years and still haven’t found out where Silas and Mary died. They disappeared from West Virginia about 1887 and no one has been able to tell me where they went. Records show that Easton is the only one of their children who stayed in West Virginia. It appears he and Julia separated sometime during their marriage. He was living in Huntington close to his son, Jake, when he was killed by a C & O train engine in 1924. Julia died in 1942 also in Huntington. Their children were Mary (Mrs. Ebb Tomblin); Silas; Rosey; Cowen; Wayne; Minnie; Ellen (Mrs. Joseph Canterbury); Effie (Mrs. Scott); Jake; and Thomas. No Henry. I don’t find a Henry in any of my list of grandchildren of Silas and Mary.

You possibly might find your Henry and family in the Fayette County 1910 West Virginia census. The Social Security Death Index lists no names for Henry Fannin and Cora Fannin with dates of interest. It did list a couple of Elmo Fannins of interst. One was born 21 March 1898 and died 16 October 1990 Naugatuck, Mingo County, WV. The other was born 12 March 1924 and died in May 1980 at Vero Beach, Indian River County, FL. His Social Security Card was issued in West Virginia, but he may be too young to be Henry and Cora’s.

I found an obituary for a Jimmy Fannin, born 8 April 1948 at Williamson, WV to Elmo, Jr. and Ola Mae (Chapman) Fannin. Elmo was born at Prestonsburg, KY, and Ola Mae was born in Canada. Address at death was 955 ½ 4th Avenue, Williamson, WV. He died 10 April 1948. He was buried in Statin Cemetery, Roadfork, Kentucky. Informant on the death certificate was Elmo Fannin, Williamson, WV. I would guess that this is a descendant of Henry and Cora through Elmo, Sr.

I found one Henry Fannin of interest in the 1880 census. At Vanceburg, Lewis County, Kentucky in the household of Gardner H. Fannin was a son, Henry L. Fannin, age 13. This would figure he was born about 1867 in Kentucky. “Hanner” (probably Hannah) appears to be Gardner’s second wife, as there were four step-children with the last name, “Zorins.” I don’t have the original census page, so I can’t tell when they were married. Gardner’s oldest child was age 19 making his birthdate around 1861, so if this is the correct family, you should find them in the 1870 census. Fannin children and approximate birth dates were: Francis 1861; Tobins (probably Tobias) 1863; John F. 1865 in Ohio; Henry 1867 back in KY; Hanner (probably Hannah) 1869; Sherman 1872; and Mary J. 1874. Age of youngest stepson, James Zorins, was 11, indicating Gardner’s second wife was in Missouri in 1869.
