The first 104 pensionados invariably came from the principal families of their hometown or region. To qualify as a pensionado, a battery of tests, written and some oral tests, were administered—in English-- to percolate only the most promising academic achievers. Expectedly, the crème of the crop came from the upper class. In essence, they who had the time to tutor, and the wealth to insure that their scions would score better than the average plebian. Latter pensionados, would inevitably spring forth from both the rich and the sacrificing poor. In any case, here are the first Pensionados to America! 1903 PENSIONADOS (104) 1 ABAYA Timoteo Laguna 2 ACOSTA Rafael Pangasinan 3 AGANA Bernardo Tarlac 4 AGCAOILI Romarico Ilocos Norte 5 AGUILAR Andres Cebu 6 ALBA Digno Capiz 7 ALCAZAR Candido Iloilo 8 ALIGADA Orancio Masbate 9 ALVAREZ Ramon Zamboanga 10 APOSTOL Silverio Zambales 11 ARBOLEDA Jose Albay 12 AVELINO Juan Cavite 13 BALTAZAR Apolinario Manila 14 BARRETTO Carlos Manila 15 BATUNGBAKAL Jose Bataan 16 BILLEDO Mariano Abra 17 BOCOBO Jorge Tarlac 18 BORJA Firmo Laguna 19 BUENO Pablo Negros Oriental 20 BURGOS Jose Manila 21 CABRERA Jose Cebu 22 CARBONELL Mariano La Union 23 CRUZ Mariano MANAS Laguna 24 CHANCO Jose Maria Cebu 25 DELGADO Francisco Manila 26 DONATO Francisco Cagayan 27 ESPINOLA Gregorio Sorsogon 28 ESPIRITU Jose Pampanga 29 FAVIS Esterio Ilocos Sur 30 FERNANDEZ Vicente Ilocos Sur 31 FLORES Gabriel Manila 32 FRAGANTE Vicente Ilocos Sur 33 GALLARDO Silvino Rizal 34 GARCIA Arturo Manila 35 GOMEZ Jose Manila 36 GOMEZ Liborio Manila 37 GONZAGA Isaias Cebu 38 GONZALES Jose Surigao 39 GONZALES Manuel Pangasinan 40 GUAZON Potenciano Manila 41 HERNANDO Hipolito Ilocos Norte 42 HIDALGO Marceliano Pangasinan 43 HIDROSOLIO Ludovico Capiz 44 HIPOLITO Segundo Manila 45 IBALIO Esteban Ilocos Norte 46 ILUSTRE Eustacio Batangas 47 JARANILLA Delfin Iloilo 48 JOYA Mariano de Batangas 49 KASILAG Marcial Batangas 50 LARRACAS Fidel Tayabas 51 LAYGO Pacifico Batangas 52 LLAMADO Francisco Cavite 53 LOMIBAO Roque Pangasinan 54 LOPEZ Carlos Iloilo 55 LOPEZ Saturnino Nueva Ecija 56 MANALO Vicente Cavite 57 MANUEL Gregorio Cebu 58 MONASTERIAL Cenon Nueva Ecija 59 MONDONEDO Mariano Isabela 60 MONTENEGRO Rafael Negros Oriental 61 MORADA Ciriaco Batangas 62 MUNOZ Jose Pangasinan 63 NACION Pablo Albay 64 NAKPIL Ramon Manila 65 NATIVIDAD Domingo Antique 66 NAVA Leon Iloilo 67 NERA Antonio La Union 68 NICDAO Miguel Pampanga 69 NIEVA Jose Manila 70 OCHOA Ramon Manila 71 OLIVER Florentino Camarines 72 ONRUBIA Lorenzo Cavite 73 PALMARES Balbino Iloilo 74 PAREDES Gregorio Cavite 75 PATDU Idelfonso Manila 76 QUIRINO Ernesto La Union 77 QUISUMBING Emilio Manila 78 RAMIREZ Eduardo Bohol 79 RAMIREZ Gregorio Bulacan 80 RAMOS Joaquin Tarlac 81 RAMOS Justo Bulacan 82 REYES Francisco D Manila 83 REYNA Jose Ilocos Sur 84 RIVERA Jose Laguna 85 ROCO Mateo Manila 86 ROSARIO Ignacio Manila 87 RUIZ Pelagio Ilocos Norte 88 SAN JOSE Domingo Camarines 89 SANTOS Alejandro Manila 90 SANVICTORES Jose G Pampanga 91 SEBASTIAN Arsenio FORMOSO Ilocos Sur 92 SERRANO Pedro Sorsogon 93 SEVILLA Andres Leyte 94 SISON Antonio G Manila 95 SUNGA Benito Bulacan 96 TUASON Alfonso Manila 97 VALDERAS Hilario Tayabas 98 VALDES Jose Manila 99 VALENCIA Felix Iloilo 100 VARELA Vicente Negros Occidental 101 VELEZ Natalio Negros Occidental 102 VEYRA Martin de Manila 103 VILLANUEVA Emilio Negros Occidental 104 YCASIANO Francisco Manila I do have more information about each of these students, including what university they attended, their degree and the year it was granted; but for expediency, I’ve only included their names and their home provinces or city/town. Again, send email here, for a healthy discussion. Hope this helps. Ad quickly yours, Bryan PSssst, I’ll post a “Bibliography” soon, if anyone is interested in finding more information about the Pensionados. Send email. Notify Administrator about this message?
