My favorite nominee for the most radically different spelling is:
Featherstonehaugh
There are some folks with that name in England and it's pronounced "Fanshaw", thus bringing it remotely into the sphere of plausibility.
But there's a French word "Faucher", a transitive verb whose meaning I have no clue since I'm sitting here with my friend's French-French dictionary and it is as Greek to me. The job titles are "Faucheur" and "Faucheuse".
"On engageait des faucheurs a la journee."
"Machine agrocole destinee a faucher."
"Petit animal... faucher quand il marche."
Oh, oh, and here's one I understand:
"Fauche" is the act of being without silver (sans argent).
"Franchir" - overcoming obstacles and difficulties
"Franche" - pure, simple, tax-free, without artifice, with an open field (soccer)...
